Chapter meetings are a great chance to meet new people, connect with others that have a shared passion and learn about initiatives and projects within the community. They support and help grow the passion and importance of the protection and enjoyment of the world's oceans, waves and beaches for all people.
At this month's chapter meeting you’ll find out how to identify and sustainably harvest seaweeds, learn about the contemporary uses of seaweed, as well as the historical significance among coastal cultures.
Join Meghan McEachern, seaweed enthusiast and member of the Sooke-based [Elemental Nature Collective]: https://www.facebook.com/Elemental-Collective-281399966124674/ for a fireside chat all about Pacific seaweeds. Meghan will highlight why we need to protect this resource and why we should consider (if we haven’t already) embracing the nourishment that seaweeds offer.
And yes, snacks will be provided, but please bring your own cup! :D

]]>The first perfect wave score on the women's or men's World Surf League tours this season gave Conlogue the lead in her Bells Beach final on Saturday. The 26-year-old American went on to win her third women's Bells Beach title, beating Hawaiian giant killer Malia Manuel.
"Right when I finished the wave, it felt right,"
Conlogue said. It is only the second perfect 10 wave score of Conlogue's career.
"Right when I dropped in, I thought 'wow, this canvas is just so beautiful' and it was a classic Bells bowl wave," she said. "It was definitely a thrill. It was definitely a crazy way to win a bell."
It was also a far cry from this time last year when Conlogue was at Bells Beach with her foot in a moon boot.
John John Florence won his first men's Bells Beach title, with the Hawaiian ace also back in the tour lead for the first time since his 2016-17 world titles. Florence was the standout in the men's event on Saturday, after almost being washed onto the rocks during Friday's competition. He beat reigning world champion Gabriel Medina in their headline quarter-final and downed 2017 Bells Beach champion Jordy Smith in the semi-finals. Florence faltered early in his final against Brazil's Filipe Toledo, but had the lead with 12 seconds left. Toledo needed a 6.98 wave score, but only managed a 5.90.
Saturday was also a triumph for Australian wildcard Ryan Callinan, who narrowly lost his first Bells Beach semi-final to Toledo. His mother Janice died in 2017, just over a year after he also lost father Garry. He was the last Australian in the men's or women's draws at Bells Beach. Such a strong performance will boost Callinan's chances of rejoining the world tour for the first time since 2016.
Seeya soon!

It's so important to apply ourselves and learn ways to be more sustainable. The age old saying reduce, reuse, recycle has been playing on repeat since we were children. All we have to do is listen and put in the effort. After all, we're responsible for our footprint.

Dark Seas is a salty-surfer and rugged-sea-dweller brand based out of California. They started in 2009, and while keeping a raw ocean style brand, their motivation comes from those who are fearlessly committed to their craft. Whether it be surfing, fishing, artistry or any modern day adventurer.
Grundéns started at the beginning of the 20th century, when a son of a fisherman grew tired of the unforgiving weather on the west coast of Sweden. This man's name was Carl Grundén, and in a effort to support all those with a passion for fishing, he began the voyage of manufacturing water repellent garments that could withstand the forces of nature.
It's exciting and fitting that these two are working together, and even more exciting that we have the opportunity to support them and spread good quality materials.
Come by the shop and check out some of their apparel!
